CORONA DEL MAR — For most of the first half, Wilson High of Hacienda Heights had two or more soccer players swarm to guard Corona del Mar senior standout Reed Williams, Sea Kings Coach George Larsen said.

But the CdM first-year coach moved junior Brian Ford as an attacking midfielder to offset the Wildcats’ plans to stuff Williams. Ford made Wilson pay. He scored two goals to help lead the top-seeded Sea Kings to a 4-1 win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Thursday at CdM.

Freshman Jack McBean scored, as did senior Chris Burke for CdM (20-1-1), which won its eighth straight match. The Sea Kings, co-champions of the Pacific Coast League, have outscored opponents, 26-2, during that stretch.

The UCLA-bound Williams has scored 27 goals this season. He also has 10 assists. But with the Wildcats pressuring him and the Sea Kings overly excited to compete as the top seed in the playoffs, CdM started a bit slow.

“We looked like we had a bit of the nerves,” Larsen said. “[Wilson] was scrappy and they defended well. They were hard to put away. Once we talked at halftime we wore them down and opened the game up.

“They knew about Reed. They were keying on stopping him ... They effectively stopped Reed, but in doing so they let Brian break open the game and he did so.”

McBean scored in the ninth minute off an assist from Williams to give CdM a 1-0 lead. But Wilson responded to tie the score.

Ford scored in the 37th minute and again in the 66th minute. Sophomore Mason Case assisted on Ford’s first goal and McBean had the assist on the other.

Senior Ryan Kontra assisted on Burke’s goal in the 79th minute. CdM goalkeeper Connor Gaal had three saves.

CdM will face Carpinteria in the second round Tuesday at a site to be determined by a coin flip today. Carpinteria defeated Inglewood, 2-1.
