Huntington Beach native Brett Simpson will have a send-off Friday, celebrating his qualification for this year’s Assn. of Surfing Professionals World Tour.

The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. at Huntington Surf and Sport. Simpson, the 2009 U.S. Open of Surfing champion, will be on hand, along with other Hurley riders. A film will be shown documenting Simpson’s road to the ASP. Also, Huntington Beach Mayor Cathy Green will issue Simpson a city proclamation commending him for his surfing excellence.

The event will be just hours before Simpson flies to Australia for his first ASP World Tour event.
