Before a soccer game, Jillian Beck can sometimes be seen bouncing with her teammates as they prepare with warm-up music. That same girl is the Estancia High Associated Student Body president.

After the whistle blows, amid the action, Beck is the one who doesn’t mind physical contact. Aggressive might be an understatement when describing her style. That same girl mentors freshmen at Estancia.

Earlier this month, Beck, a senior captain for the Eagles, performed a mock trial with other classmates in Sacramento as part of the Youth In Government club. The senior, who carries close to a 4.7 grade-point average, is also part of the Estancia site council that deals with the school’s finances.

The player that sprints at full speed across the pitch is the same girl who walked along Olvera Street in Los Angeles, practicing Spanish with her classmates in the foreign language club. She’s co-president of the Estancia Spanish club.

A captain of the girls’ soccer team, she’s also known as the school’s winter formal queen.

As the sun sets on any day, it’s usually time for Beck to hit the books. She has taken three Advanced Placement courses in each of the two semesters this year.

UC Irvine and Hofstra have accepted her. She’s applied to Harvard, Yale, Duke, Brown and Stanford, hoping for more options.

It never seems stop for Beck. So many hats to wear, yet she always seems to be a leader in each role.

“I always like to be active and involved in something,” Beck said. “When I was younger, my parents would encourage me to do different things. I have a lot of interests, so it’s hard for me to pick one thing. I manage to do everything ... Soccer, I’ve been playing since AYSO. That’s the one thing that I have stuck with.”

Estancia Coach Jessica Gatica is grateful for that. The second-year coach named Beck a team captain with no second thoughts. Not only does she lead well, but Beck also became one of the team’s top players because of her versatility.

The second-team All-Orange Coast League pick scored four goals and had two assists. As a center midfielder, she was also a solid defender.

“She’s the heart and soul of our team,” Gatica said before the Eagles’ 3-0 season-ending loss to Santiago of Corona in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs Wednesday. “When I need to regroup the team or do anything else, she’s the one I call and she’s the one I go to ... She’s amazing. I hope my own kids are a fraction of what she is. She’s just a great kid all around.”

Her ability to handle several tasks came in good use when she helped Estancia win its first-round match at Flintridge Prep Feb. 19. She was key for the Eagles’ shutout during regulation and she also stepped up during the penalty-kick shootout.

She was one of four Eagles who scored, as Estancia (11-8-4) advanced with the 4-2 win. She said she was nervous before her shot, but did her best to calm down in the pressure situation.

When it was over it was time to celebrate. After the season ended Wednesday, it was on to the next sport.

She plays center field for the softball team. A day after the loss to the Sharks, she was practicing with her cap on her head and hand in her glove.

But, soccer and that Estancia team remain close to her heart.

“I definitely think that this was my favorite season by far,” Beck said of soccer. “We became so much more of a team ... We had so much fun. Even though I’m sad I can’t play soccer any more, I’m even more sad, I can’t be with them any more.”
