AZUSA — Junior left fielder Brandon Young drove in five runs in the two games to help the visiting Lions sweep the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday.

The wins made it five straight for Vanguard (12-1, 4-0), which swept the four-game GSAC-opening series with the No. 17-ranked Cougars.

The Lions had a 10-run sixth inning to claim the seven-inning second game, 16-10.

In Game 1, they erased an 8-2 deficit, broke a 9-9 deadlock with two in the ninth, then held on for the one-run triumph.

Young and Kip Masuda homered in the ninth for the Lions in the opener, which also included Vanguard homers by Zach and Tyson Leighton.

Vanguard prevailed, despite being outhit, 28-26, in the two games.

James McGeary and Michael Anderson each earned relief wins for the Lions, who received a Game 1 save from Robert Purpura.

Young was four for nine on the day.

Eric Krzysiak was six for nine with three RBIs and three runs in the doubleheader, in which Tyson Leighton had four RBIs.

APU falls to 7-5, 0-4.

PALM DESERT — The visiting Pirates scored four in the ninth to tie it, only to give up the game-winner in the 10th Friday at College of the Desert.

Jacob Rogers went three for five to pace OCC’s 15-hit attack, which also included two hits apiece from Brooklyn Foster, Spencer Keuhn, Mykal Stokes and Sam Michaels.

Stokes drove in two runs to lead OCC (6-4).

OCC starter Steven Cerda allowed five runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He entered having given up two earned runs on 10 hits in 13 innings.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego

IRVINE — Sophomore opposite Carson Clarke had 27 kills, four aces serves and 10 digs to help the Anteaters earn a 30-15, 30-25, 29-31, 30-23 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Friday at the Bren Events Center.

Junior Jordan DuFault added 16 kills, 10 digs, five total blocks and two aces for the No. 11-ranked Anteaters (9-9, 5-8 in conference).

Freshman setter Ian Wynne had 52 assists and 13 digs, both career bests, while sophomore middle blocker Austin D’Amore had seven block assists for the winners.

Clark hit .434, while junior middle Kevin Wynne hit .500 with five kills and only one error and D’Amore hit .364 with five kills.

Senior Cory Yoder chipped in nine kills, five block assists and two aces.

UCI totaled 11 aces and hit .328 as a team.

Junior setter Phil Bannan, a Corona del Mar High product, had 47 assists and a match-high 15 digs for No. 14-ranked UCSD (5-12, 2-10).

COSTA MESA — Brad Hemmerling led the host Pirates with 13 kills in the 30-22, 30-27, 30-26 nonconference win Friday.

Paul Leon added 38 assists for the Pirates (7-0).

The Brahmas are 0-7.

COSTA MESA — Patricia Olvera pitched a three-hit shutout in the five-inning second game of the nonconference doubleheader Friday at Vanguard.

Amanda Young and Amanda Ohahen had two hits and two runs batted in for VU.

April Glenn was three for three with two RBIs in the Game 1 triumph that included two hits by Young and RBIs from Kari Bergerson, Stephanie Leisenring, Angela St. Croix and Kaysle Flasck.

Vanguard is 3-7, while Patten falls to 9-5.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sacramento State 4,

UC Irvine 3

IRVINE — Stephanie Hammel and Courtney Byron won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, for the Anteaters in the nonconference loss Friday.

Kristina Smith also earned a point for UCI (3-4) by winning in three sets at No. 5 singles.

The Hornets are 7-3.

Azusa Pacific 7, Vanguard 2

COSTA MESA — Gabriela Bergmanova and Betyel Tesfa had singles wins for the No. 6-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Bergmanova won, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot, while Tesfa prevailed, 6-2, 6-3, in her No. 2 match.

APU, ranked No. 11, improved to 4-1, 3-1 in conference.

Vanguard is 2-3, 2-3.

COSTA MESA – The host Pirates improved to 7-1 with the nonconference triumph Friday.

COSTA MESA — Alessandro Ventre and Sandro Bucher won at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, respectively, for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Friday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Lucas Pereura and Tino Brodar won at No. 1 doubles for the No. 6-ranked Lions (3-3, 2-3 in conference).

No. 5 APU is 5-1, 3-0.

COSTA MESA — The Pirates dominated the Orange Empire Conference dual meets Friday. The men won, 139-15, and the women triumphed, 131-19.

Liana Fuentes won six individual events and Kimone Hewitt won four for the Pirates’ women.

Donovan Toban won four men’s individual events for OCC.
