Newport Lightning Wins AAU Title
The Newport Lightning boys 8th grade club basketball team capped an undefeated Winter season by winning the championship of the Southern California AAU Hoopstars League playoffs on February 27.
In the semi-final game against Edge of Rowland Heights, the Lightning had little trouble as it rode the defensive and rebounding efforts of power forward Grant Moore and guards Andrew Chase and Jeff Johnston to a 47-24 win. Pacing the Lightning offense from the perimeter were Alec Markling (13 points) and Braden Brahs (10 points on 4 for 5 shooting, including two 3-pointers), with center Andrew Moore (10 points) dominating inside. Point guard Charlie Coffman directed the attack and hit two timely long-range jumpers.
In the finals against Whittier Showcase, the Lightning broke open a tight 30-22 game after three quarters with an offensive explosion in the fourth to win going away, 52-30. Jack Williamson led all scorers with 17 points (including four 3-pointers), and Ryan Schroth (12 points) was unstoppable inside for the Lightning. Blake Flamson held Showcase’s all-league forward Austin Drake scoreless to win defensive player of the game honors. The boys 8th grade team is coached by Mike Flamson and Mike Coffman.
Newport Lightning is the premier AAU club basketball program for elite players in the Corona del Mar, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa area, featuring boys and girls travel teams in 3rd grade through high school.
