COSTA MESA — Freshman Kent Kawaguchi had 16 kills to help the Lightning win their season opener, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-27, 15-9, Tuesday.
Junior Mattias Russo-Larsson, a former libero playing in his first match as an outside hitter, recorded 14 kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Cole Kirby had 12 kills and senior opposite Trent Friedmann had five aces and 11 digs for Sage Hill (1-0).
Senior setter Jesse Xiao had 39 assists, 12 digs, and four kills for the Lightning, who play at Saddleback Valley Christian Thursday.

Newport wins
DANA POINT — Kaleigh Gilchrist recorded a perfect score to help lead the Newport Harbor High surf team to a 80-67 win over rival Dana Hills Tuesday morning at Salt Creek Beach.
Gilchrist scored a meet-high perfect 10 by all three judges on one of her two scoring waves to win the girls’ shortboard event. Newport Harbor beat Dana Hills, 13-8, in the girls’ shortboard.
Newport Harbor’s Shelby Detmers placed second for the girls’ squad.
The boys’ shortboard squad defeated San Clemente, 54-30, to improve their record to 5-1.
The Sailors won nine of the top 12 positions in the four heats. Placing first were Canon Call, Colin Moran and Jared Cassidy. Cassidy had the highest meet average wave score of 7.75. Coming in second were Fritz Howser, Max Colvin, Daniel Nezter and Jesse Johnson in their respective heats. Zach Porteous and Casey Bushong placed third in their respective heats.
Aaron Cervantes placed third for the longboard squad.
With the victory, Newport improved its record to 4-2.
Newport’s next contest is Thursday at 56th Street against Dana Hills.

SANTA ANA — Shane Korber and Ryan Peyton each won key singles sets in the Sea Kings’ season opener Tuesday.
The Sea Kings swept doubles play.
CdM will compete at the Fresno Classic on Friday and Saturday. During the 116-team event, the Sea Kings will have two teams. One will compete in Division I and another in Division III.
Estancia 12, Bolsa Grande 6
COSTA MESA — Kevin Thomas, the Eagles’ No. 1 singles player, swept, 7-5, 6-2, 6-0, in Estancia’s season opener Tuesday.
The Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team of John Rivera and Jared Payzant also swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
The Eagles will scrimmage with Costa Mesa Thursday at Estancia, and will then play at Newport Harbor Tuesday.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA — Andrew Kurzweil and Sean Batten swept in No. 2 doubles play in the season opener for the Lightning Tuesday.
Alex Manolakas and Kevin Marshack won two of three sets in No. 1 doubles for Sage Hill.
Alex Koeberle won Sage Hill’s lone singles set.
The Lightning plays host to Mater Dei today at The Tennis Club at 4 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Tanner Trauthen shot one-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors in the Sea Kings’ season opener at SeaCliffe Country Club Tuesday.
Senior Steve Bruno and junior Ryan Grable, as well as sophomores Mike Moohead and John Davenport each shot 38 for CdM.
The Sea Kings will play against Servite Thursday at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.
BOYS’ SWIMMING
La Quinta 88, Estancia 79
COSTA MESA — The Eagles’ Asher Twardowski and Conner Graham won two individual events each and were a part of two relay wins in a nonleague meet Tuesday.
Twardowski won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Graham won the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke. Twardowski and Graham were on Estancia’s 200 medley relay and 200 free relay winning teams.
