Briefs:

Newport Harbor High girls’ and boys’ golf coach Scott Tarnow was named National Section Seven Coach of the Year for 2008-09 by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Tarnow led the Sailors’ girls to a 17-1 record in the fall of 2008, including a Sunset League title.

In the spring of 2009, Tarnow’s Newport Harbor boys’ team finished third at the CIF Central Team Divisional to advance to the CIF Team Final for the first time in school history. The Tars were 16-5-1, including a 7-3 mark in the Sunset League.

Last fall, Tarnow guided the Sailors’ girls to a 19-0 record and a 13th-place finish in the 16-team CIF Regional.

Section Seven covers Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, Utah and California.

Tarnow’s nomination was approved by the CIF Southern Section and the State CIF office before his award was made final before a selection committee comprised of educators from around the United States.

Chin earns award

UC Irvine senior John Chin has been named the Big West Conference Golfer of the Month for February.

Chin was medalist at the Anteater Invitational with a 54-hole total of 11-under 202 (66-65-71). UCI came back from 14 shots down in the final round to defeat Santa Clara in a one-hole playoff for the team title at Mesa Verde Country Club Feb. 2.

Chin finished sixth in the USD Callaway Invitational Feb. 8-9 with an even-par 216 on rounds of 77, 71 and 68. The ’Eaters were fourth in the team competition.

Chin leads UCI with a 70.76 average and four top-10 finishes this season.

UCI returns to action Monday and Tuesday in the Fresno State Lexus Classic at San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno.
