Vanguard 4, The Master’s 3

COSTA MESA — The host Lions scored two in the eighth to rally from a 3-2 deficit in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.

The win upped Vanguard’s record to 15-1, 6-0 in conference.

Zach Leighton was three four four and drove in the tying run in the eighth with a single. The go-ahead run eventually scored on a passed ball, allowing reliever Peter Birdwell to pocket the win.

Birdwell pitched 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out one.

Vanguard starter Jason Dovel pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. He struck out six and walked two.

Kip Masuda and Eric Krzysiak hit solo homers in the fifth for the winners. It was the fourth homer of the season for Masuda, which leads the team.

Vanguard is scheduled to visit The Master’s (9-7, 3-3) for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Orange Coast 3

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The visiting Pirates were down, 7-0, after four innings and never recovered in the Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.

Orange Coast fell to 7-6, 0-2 in conference and returns to action Saturday at noon at Santa Ana.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 7, Fullerton 2

COSTA MESA — Kim Ho and Melissa Boyer won in singles and doubles for the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Ho and Boyer earned three-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. They then teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Cal Poly Pomona 4

COSTA MESA — Gabriela Bergmanova won at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles to pace the host Lions in the nonconference match Thursday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Betyel Tesfa, Katereyna Malakhova and Brittnie Furuvald also earned singles wins for No. 6-ranked Vanguard (3-3).

MEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 2, Fullerton 2

FULLERTON — Brad Fisher, Yannick Lepage and Matt Miller won in singles and doubles for the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Fisher and Lepage paired to win at No. 1 doubles, while Miller teamed with Jesse Chen for the win at No. 2 doubles.

Fisher, Lepage and Miller claimed straight-set victories at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively.

OCC is 9-1, 4-1 in conference.

Fisher won 12 of 15 singles games and Lepage won 12 of 16.
