Shipp named all-star football coach

Fountain Valley High Coach John Shipp has been named coach of the South squad for the 51st Brea Lions Orange County all-star football game, scheduled for July 16 at Orange Coast College.

Shipp led the Barons to an 8-3 record last year, as well as a trip to the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs.

The coaches for the game were announced and introduced Monday at the National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Shipp, 38, has been coach at Fountain Valley for six years. He took over the program after three years as quarterback coach at Golden West College.

The North coach for the game will be Joe Hay of Garden Grove. Both Shipp and Hay graduated from Westminster High.

Ex-Charger Heyer earns Pac-10 honor

Edison High alumnus Kurt Heyer was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week recently after a big debut performance for the University of Arizona baseball team.

Heyer also was tabbed one of three “Louisville Slugger” National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, after striking out 13 batters over six innings in an 8-1 win against Utah Valley on Feb. 19.

Heyer, who helped lead the Chargers to the CIF Southern Section Division I championship game last year, allowed one run on three hits in his collegiate debut. It was win No. 2,500 for the Arizona program, just the seventh school to reach that milestone.

Heyer was last year’s Sunset League Pitcher of the Year, going 11-3 with a 0.82 ERA.

Peterson earns hoops honor

Kelly Peterson, an Edison High alumna, recently earned All-Northwest Conference women’s basketball honors for Whitman College.

Peterson, who was named NWC Player of the Week earlier in the season, was an All-NWC Honorable Mention selection. The 5-foot-8 freshman guard averaged 11.4 points and four rebounds per game for Whitman. She was second in the NWC in shooting percentage.

Peterson’s teammate at Edison, forward Mary Madden, is also playing for Whitman. Madden finished her freshman year averaging six points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Peterson and Madden helped lead the 2009 Chargers to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA title game, as well as the second round of the state playoffs.

Edison baseball adds accolade

The Edison High baseball team is ranked No. 1 by the Los Angeles Times in its preseason baseball rankings for Southern California.

Edison, the defending Sunset League champion and CIF Southern Section Division I finalist, opens its season Friday at the Loara Tournament. The Chargers are also ranked No. 1 in the state by Calhisports.com and No. 1 nationally by Maxpreps’ Xcellent 25 — up from No. 3 a week ago.

The Chargers begin at the Loara Tournament at 7 p.m. Friday against Aliso Niguel at Glover Stadium in Anaheim. Marina is also in the tournament and the Vikings open at home against Artesia at 3 p.m. Friday.
