IRVINE — Senior first baseman Jeff Cusick went five for seven with two home runs and seven runs batted in to pace the nonconference doubleheader sweep Friday at Anteater Ballpark.

Junior Sean Madigan went four for eight with four RBIs, a homer and four runs for the No. 11-ranked ’Eaters (6-4).

Senior left-hander Danny Bibona earned the Game 2 victory, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out 11 in seven innings.

Freshman Evan Brock earned the Game 1 pitching win, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings after taking over for starter Christian Bergman in the fifth.

Eric Pettis worked a perfect ninth, striking out two, to close the opening game to earn his first save of the season.

Junior Brian Hernandez went three for six with an RBI for UCI, for which Jordan Leyland went three for three with two RBIs in the second game.

Francis Larson (two RBIs) and Ronnie Shaeffer (one RBI) had two hits apiece to bolster UCI’s 13-hit attack in Game 2.

The series finale is scheduled today at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 78, Biola 68

COSTA MESA — Senior guard Bridgette Reyes scored a game-high 28 points to lead the host Lions in the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament Friday.

Reyes made seven of 11 field-goal attempts, including all four of her three-point tries to help the top-seeded Lions, ranked No. 3 in NAIA Division I, improve to 24-2. She also added a team-best nine rebounds.

The Lions, who shared the conference regular-season title with Azusa Pacific, will face Westmont in the tournament title game Monday at home at 7:30 p.m.

Senior Rachel Copeland had 15 points and six rebounds for Vanguard.

Biola fell to 20-11, 4-6.

Westmont, the No. 6 seed, beat No. 7-seeded Hope International, 82-68, in the other semifinal.

Westmont upset No. 3-seeded Point Loma Nazarene, while Hope knocked off APU in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UCLA

LOS ANGELES — Junior Jordan DuFault had 20 kills and senior Cole Reinholm added 19 to help the No. 12-ranked Anteaters upset the No. 5-ranked Bruins, 23-34, 30-23, 20-28, 20-28, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

DuFault hit .437 and Reinholm came off the bench to hit .405 for the winners (10-10, 6-9 in conference).

Libero Kenny Webster had a career-high 18 digs for UCI. Coached by former UCLA player and assistant coach John Speraw.

UCLA fell to 10-9, 8-7.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7, UC Riverside 0

IRVINE — The host anteaters improved to 4-4, 2-1 in the Big West Conference by trouncing the conference-rival Highlanders Friday.

Courtney Byron swept, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
