SAN LUIS OBISPO — The UC Irvine men’s basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to defeat host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 91-84, in overtime Saturday night.
The win propels the Anteaters (14-17, 6-10 in conference) to a berth in the Big West Conference Tournament that begins Wednesday at the Anaheim Convention Center.
UCI, the No. 7 seed, will meet No. 6-seeded Cal Poly at approximately 8:15 p.m.
Junior Darren Moore (career-high 24 points) hit two three-pointers in the final nine seconds of regulartion, the second with .9 seconds falling away from the left corner to force OT.
Patrick Rembert had seven of his career-high 20 points in overtime and Michael Hunter had 19 points, including four three-pointers to pass Ross Schraeder atop the school’s career leaderboard with 234.
Eric Wise had 17 points and six rebounds. Moore led UCI with eight boards, while Rembert added seven.
BASEBALL

SANTA CLARITA — Senior Brett Halstead drove in two runs with a one-out, pinch-hit double in the Vanguard ninth, but the potential tying run was stranded at third base in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Center fielder Tyson Leighton went three for four and scored a run, while Brandon Young was two for four for the Lions (15-2, 6-1), who saw their six-game winning streak snapped.
Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was rescheduled for Monday at 2 p.m.
Lance Abbott allowed one run on six hits in six innings.
The Master’s is 10-7, 4-3.

IRVINE — Sophomore Mikah Maly-Karros set the UCI single-season record for made free throws with 138, and scored a team-high 19 points in the Big West Conference game Saturday at the Bren Events Center.
Maly-Karros was four for five from the foul line to surpass a 21-year-old record held by Natasha Park (135).
Senior Rebecca Maessen had 12 points, a season-high six assists and six rebounds for UCI (9-20, 6-10 in conference), which will be the No. 7 seed in the Big West Tournament that opens Wednesday at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Senior Keyonna Johnson had 13 points for the ’Eaters, who received 12 rebounds from Jazmyne White.
Cal Poly is 18-10, 11-5.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Gabriela Bergmanova defeated senior All-American Katia Sabate, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 1 singles to help the host Lions nearly upset the Sunbirds in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
No. 2-ranked FPU (11-0, 7-0 in conference) extended its winning streak to 61 matches.
Bermanova teamed with Ekaterina Gabishvili to win in doubles.
Gabishvili and Katereyna Malakhova added singles wins for No. 7-ranked Vanguard (3-4, 2-4).

IRVINE — The host Anteaters won four of six singles matches played Saturday in the Big West Conference match shortened by rain.
Courtney Byron, Brooke Bartlett, Becka Kwan and Kristina Smith topped their singles opponents to help UCI improve to 5-4, 3-1 in conference.
Northridge is 4-2, 1-2.

FULLERTON — UC Irvine senior Tim Murphy was second in the men’s 800 meters in one minute, 52.32 seconds and Chloe Fata was second in the women’s 1,500 in 4:36.89 to pace Anteater individual finishers Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.
The men’s 400 relay of Hermes Ongsansoy, George Hernandez, Kevin Palmer and Jacob Yowell was second in 41.86.
Yowell was third in the 110 high hurdles (14.46) and Sam Hyams was third in the 1,500 in 3:53.50 for the the UCI men, who were also third in the 1,600 relay (Hernandez, Murphy, Palmer Yowell) in 3:16.09.
Amber Middleton (100 hurdles in 15.07 and the 400 hurdles in 1:03.58) had a pair of third-place finishes for the UCI women.
Yowell was fourth in the men’s 400 hurdles (52.77) and Madeline Leduc was fourth in the women’s triple jump (37-11 1/2 ).

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Lucas Pereira won at No. 2 singles for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
No. 7-ranked Vanguard fell to 3-4, 3-3 in conference, while the top-ranked Sunbirds are now 9-0, 6-0.

STANFORD — Corona del Mar High product Kate Baldoni had six of the host Cardinal’s nine saves in the nonconference game Saturday.
Four UCI players scored and Lauren Davis had five saves for the No. 13-ranked Anteaters (7-8).
No. 2-ranked Stanford is 14-1.

Junior Amanda Young and freshman Kimberly Skoglund had two hits apiece in the two games for Vanguard (10-0, 0-2 in conference).
No. 3-ranked Point Loma is 12-0, 4-0.

EL CAJON — Brad Hemmerling had 25 kills and four aces to help lead the Pirates to a 30-27, 26-30, 28-30, 30-25, 15-8 Pacific Coast Conference win Friday night.
Troy Tomasello had 13 kills and 10 digs, while setter Paul Leon had 61 assists and nine digs for OCC (9-0, 3-0 in conference).
