Reyes tops honorees

Vanguard University senior Bridgette Reyes has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year in women’s basketball after leading the No. 3-ranked Lions to a share of the conference title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

Reyes is joined on the 14-player All-GSAC squad by teammates Rachel Copeland and Sarah Boyd.

Vanguard’s Russ Davis is Coach of the Year.

Senior Greg Scott earned all-conference recognition for the Vanguard men.

Reyes, a 5-foot-7 combo guard, averages 19.8 points, 6.1 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals. An all-conference honoree as a junior, she entered Wednesday’s GSAC Tournament quarterfinal shooting 51.2% from the field, 49.2% from three-point range and 87.5% from the foul line.

Reyes was also named NAIA and GSAC Player of the Week after averaging 26 points, six assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in a pair of conference wins over Westmont (Feb. 27) and Concordia (Feb. 23).

Copeland, a 5-10 senior, averaged 17 points and 4.6 rebounds to help the Lions to a 22-2 regular-season record, 18-2 in conference. She entered the postseason leading the team with 82 three-pointers and was shooting 39.4% from three-point range.

Boyd, a 5-4 junior, averaged 8.9 points and 5.1 assists in the regular season.

Scott, a 5-10 guard and a four-year starter, averaged 17.1 points, four assists and 3.8 rebounds for the Lions, who finished 5-21, 4-16 in conference. He was also named all-conference as a sophomore.

Former UC Irvine player Justin Johnson, a junior guard at Concordia, was named GSAC Player of the Year.
