MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Penn State def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — Outside hitter Kevin Carroll recorded a career-high 29 kills for the No. 11-ranked Anteaters in the nonconference match at the Bren Events Center Wednesday.

The No. 9-ranked Nittany Lions (14-2) won, 33-31, 30-25, 26-30, 28-30, 16-14. The Anteaters (11-11) are still looking for their first five-set victory, going 0-6 this year.

UCI outside hitter Jordan DuFault had 18 kills, 11 digs and two aces. Middle blocker Kevin Wynne added nine kills and a match-high seven total blocks. Anthony Spittle tallied 42 set assists and Ian Wynne recorded 31 set assists.

Penn State’s Will Price put away a match-high 30 kills, while Max Lipsitz had 25 kills and hit .632 (25-1-38) from the middle. Joe Sunder recorded 14 kills and Nick Turko had 10 kills for the Nittany Lions. Edgardo Goas totaled 81 set assists, while Dennis Del Valle had 25 digs.

UCI will take a break for finals and return to action hosting UCLA March 27 at the Bren Center.

Irvine Valley def. Orange Coast

IRVINE — The Pirates suffered their first loss of the season, as the Lasers won the Pacific Coast Conference match, 30-24, 28-30, 21-30, 30-25, 15-13, Wednesday night.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in conference, while OCC fell to 9-1, 3-1.

Alex Reis, who played at OCC last season, led the way for Irvine Valley. The sophomore outside hitter finished with a match-high 26 kills for the second contest in a row for the Lasers.

OCC played its best in the third game. Tied, 8-8, OCC went on a 10-1 run, capped by an ace by Troy Tomasello, a block by Jeff Patton and an IVC hitting error to go up, 18-9. OCC led by as many as nine points in the game and IVC didn’t get closer than six points the rest of the way. The Pirates closed out the game, 30-21, with a kill by Harrison Carroll and an ace by Jon Parry.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard sweeps Bethany

COSTA MESA — Amanday Young, Brittany Parlopino and Katharine Jablonski were key players for the Lions in their victorious nonconference doubleheader Wednesday.

Young, a pinch hitter, produced a game-winning, two-run single with two out to lead Vanguard (13-9) to a 5-4 win in eight innings.

Parlopino went two for four with two runs batted in and a run scored in the win.

Jablonski, a pitcher, struck out seven, walked none and allowed four hits in her complete-game 3-0 victory to close out the doubleheader.
