POWAY — Weston Nielsen recorded 31 kills to help lead Corona del Mar High to an eighth-place finish in the 32-team tournament at Epic Volleyball Club Saturday.

The Sea Kings (3-3) began with a 25-19, 22-25, 15-8 win over Palos Verdes. Nielsen led with nine kills. John Christian and Spencer Haly added six kills each. Joey Booth also had six kills to go with his nine digs.

Punahou, which won the tournament, then beat CdM, 25-16, 25-19. Nielsen had 10 kills, while Parker Brown had 21 assists.

The Sea Kings lost to Poway, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11, to close out the tournament. Nielsen had 12 kills and Evan Dean had seven kills.

CdM will play host to Laguna Beach Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

BASEBALL

Estancia 2, Santiago 0

COSTA MESA — Senior Andres Gonzalez pitched a complete-game shutout for the Eagles in a consolation game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Orange County division Saturday.

Gonzalez gave up just three hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Ryan Cherney led the Eagles (4-1) with a two-for-three performance.

Estancia plays host to Segerstrom Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — The host Sea Kings scored eight runs in the first two innings and sophomore Andrew McCormack threw 5 1/3 innings of one-run relief to close out the Newport Elks Tournament with a consolation win Saturday.

Chase Carlisle was two for four with two runs batted in, Parker Werline was two for three with one RBI, Michael Borchard was two for four with an RBI, and Will Morrow as two for three to pace CdM’s 11-hit attack.

CdM (2-3) returns to action with a doubleheader at Back Bay rival Newport Harbor Tuesday, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Magnolia 9, Sage Hill 8

ANAHEIM— A.J. Wolfson went three for four with a home run and three runs batted in for the Lightning in a consolation game of the Newport Elks Tournament’s Orange County division Saturday.

Allen Brown went two for four with two RBIs for Sage Hill (2-3). The Lightning play at Capistrano Valley Christian Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
