NEWPORT BEACH — Sophomore Mike Moorhead shot three-under-par 32, which included a hole-in-one, to help lead the Corona del Mar High boys’ golf team to a huge nonleague win over Servite Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

So just how big was the Sea Kings’ 182-185 victory?

“That is the best win in my 12 years of coaching,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said. “It’s just a phenomenal win. To beat a team that is that accomplished, they were CIF champs last year, I’m still in shock. Overall [the Sea Kings] just grinded it out and just kind of said, “This is for us.’ ”

The Friars (5-1) suffered their first loss in more than year, as they went 23-0 last season, according to ocvarsity.com.

Moorhead finished with two birdies. He bogeyed No. 7 before his hole-in-one on the 207-yard, par-three No. 8.

“It was with a six iron,” Starkweather said.

Starkweather was also pleased Moorhead edged Servite’s Patrick Cantlay, the UCLA-bound senior who shot a 33.

Tanner Trauthen’s 35 round significantly helped make the difference in the match, Starkweather said. It helped CdM improve to 7-1, its only loss coming to Servite at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills March 4.

Josh Starnes and Steve Bruno both shot 38, while John Davenport and Jono Keedy each shot 39 to contribute to the Sea Kings’ victory.

CdM will face San Juan Hills in a Pacific Coast League opener today at Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano.
