Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Brandon Pesante stroked a two-out single in Game 1 to help Vanguard defeat Westmont, 3-1, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

The Lions (21-4, 12-2 in conference) also won the second game, 8-7.

In the first game, Pesante’s single up the middle scored Keegan Freeman from second base to put the Lions ahead, 2-1, in the sixth inning. Shortstop Zachary Leighton then laced a double to right center, scoring Pesante and giving Vanguard starter Brandon Godfrey a 3-1 cushion going into the seventh.

The second game featured an eighth inning go-ahead blast by Bryce Arroya that put the Lions up, 8-7, setting up Purpura for his second save of the day. After getting two straight hitters to ground out, he struck out Chris Ramirez to end the game.

Designated hitter Eric Krzysiak went four for four with three runs and two runs batted in.

Leighton was two for two, knocked in two runs and scored twice for the Lions.

Vanguard will play a doubleheader Saturday at Westmont.

Riverside 6

COSTA MESA — Sam Michaels homered and drove in five runs and Kevin Cho was three for four with four runs to pace the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.

Jordan Beck and Danny Lapchak drove in two runs apiece for OCC (12-8, 4-4 in conference), which received a strong pitching performance from starter Kyle Krogman.

Krogman allowed eight hits and two earned runs in six innings, striking out six to earn his first win in four decisions this season.

Michaels is now seven for 10 with six RBIs in two games this week.

Riverside fell to 8-9, 5-3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Orange Coast 9, Riverside 0

COSTA MESA — Melissa Boyer, the Pirates’ No. 1 singles player, had an impressive 6-4, 6-1 win in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

Boyer, with partner Kim Ho, also won in doubles, 8-2.

Ho, Anna Walinowicz, Nicole Naughton, Heather Wong and Nicole Rorick won in singles, all in straight sets, putting OCC at 7-2, 4-2 in conference.

This was the second straight win for OCC over the Tigers.
