Both of these teams will be playing in the Orange County Championships this weekend, hosted by Edison High.

JSerra takes two: Edison lost a pair of nonleague games Monday at Cal State Fullerton, as JSerra took both contests by scores of 7-4 (in 12 innings) and 5-4.

The Chargers, who were ranked No. 1 in the state in the preseason by CalHiSports, fell to 4-3.

Edison opens up Sunset League play at home against Los Alamitos on Friday.

Other local baseball teams also open up league play this week.

Marina (4-1) is at Esperanza on Friday, while Fountain Valley (3-2) is at Newport Harbor as both teams start Sunset League play.

Ocean View (2-3) opens up Golden West League play Friday at home against Westminster, while Huntington Beach (1-4) is at home against Trabuco Hills.

Los Amigos (1-4) is at home against Santiago. Brethren Christian (1-4) will be at Crean Lutheran South.

Defending Division I finalist Edison is the lone defending league champion in the area, although Huntington Beach advanced to the Division II championship game a year ago as well.

Fountain Valley has a pair of first-year baseball coaches — well, not really. Ron La Ruffa, former Barons coach, is back as the head man at the school. Dave Demarest, who coached La Quinta for 34 years, is an assistant.

Demarest won 753 games at La Quinta, an Orange County record. His teams won 22 league titles and three CIF titles. With these two experienced coaches in charge at Fountain Valley, Edison so hyped this year and Marina still extremely solid, it might have the makings of a very entertaining Sunset League campaign.
