Jeff Forsberg said it was a fun game.

Six of his travel-ball players played against each other Friday in a Costa Mesa Tournament game at TeWinkle Park. Forsberg coaches the 14-and-under HB Breeze team, which has three players from the Huntington Beach High softball team and three from Ocean View.

As for the high school game Friday, though, Forsberg’s Oilers came out on top in eight innings, 1-0.

“It was a good game,” Forsberg said. “The kids kind of enjoyed the fact they played against girls who play on the same travel-ball team. It adds a little bit of fun.”

Oilers’ freshmen Raegan Zschach, Jill Martinez and Justice Walker, along with Ocean View freshmen Brittany Hitchcock, Makaela Williamson and Erika Jason, all play for the Breeze.

Friday’s game ended using international tie-breaker rules. H.B. senior pitcher Amanda Horowitz, who has committed to Boston College, was dazzling, going the distance allowing one hit and striking out 18 Ocean View batters. Ocean View freshman pitcher Hitchcock was also very impressive, going four shutout innings while allowing two hits.

Ocean View senior pitcher Holli Floetker, who has committed to Boston University, then came on and pitched three shutout innings as well to force the extra inning tie-breaker.

“[Horowitz and Floetker] are probably two of the best pitchers in Orange County,” Forsberg said. “They’re two dominant pitchers.”

Normally in CIF, games that are tied after seven innings go into extra innings, but for tournament games, this game featured the international tie-breaker where the opponent places the player who made the last out in the previous inning on second base to start the extra inning.

Horowitz struck out the side in the eighth and H.B.’s Jillian Martinez was on second base when senior Lauren Stuhr (Notre Dame) laid down a bunt single to move Martinez to third. H.B. freshman Nicole Minnicucci then laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Junior Vicki Galasso then rifled a single to left after fouling off two 3-2 pitches to get the game winning walk-off RBI. Galasso ended the game going three for four.

Ocean View is ranked No. 9 in the CIF Southern Section Division IV poll.

Both teams are in the Laguna Hills Tournament this week.
