HUNTINGTON BEACH — Corona del Mar High rebounded from two pool-play losses Friday to advance from its pool Saturday at Edison High and earn a berth in Monday’s Division I title match against Huntington Beach.

The final is at 7 p.m. at Edison.

After topping Tesoro, 25-15, 25-18, then benefiting from tiebreakers to earn one of the pool’s two spots in the Gold Division, the Sea Kings outlasted Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 25-21, 27-25, in the quarterfinals.

CdM then rallied past Edison, 25-22, 23-25, 18-16, overcoming a 10-5 deficit in Game 3, to claim the semifinal triumph and improve to 7-5.

Weston Nielsen had 33 kills in the three matches, while Parker Brown amassed 45 assists and 15 kills Saturday.

Joey Booth, Nick Curci, Chip Zucker and Evan Dean also sparkled for the Sea Kings, who lost to Huntington Beach in pool play Friday.

Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Cody Caldwell recorded 51 kills in four matches to help lead Newport Harbor High to a sixth-place finish in Division I Saturday at Edison High.

The Sailors (5-3) lost to Dana Hills in the fifth-place match, as the Dolphins won, 25-23, 24-26, 15-13. Caldwell had 20 kills, Rusty Sary seven and Will Connelly six, while Ian Sequeira led with 13 digs and Connor Curry had 10 digs.

Newport Harbor beat Dana Hills to close out pool play Saturday morning at Fountain Valley High, 25-14, 25-19. Sary had seven kills, Curry had nine digs and Jackson Carmack had 22 assists.

Corona del Mar beat the Sailors, 25-21, 27-25, in the quarterfinals at Edison. Carmack had 20 assists and Curry had 10 digs.

Newport Harbor defeated San Clemente, 25-20, 25-12, in the fifth-place semifinal. Connelly had five kills and Zack Martin had four.

Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH — Corona del Mar High recorded two dramatic wins to earn the consolation title, finishing ninth in the prestigious 16-team tournament Saturday at The Tennis Club.

The Sea Kings beat Beacon Bay of Westchester, N.Y., 44-43, on games after a 4-4 tie in the consolation championship match. CdM’s Ismean Aboubakare rallied from a 4-0 deficit to push the set to a tiebreaker. He lost, but earned enough games to secure the team win and helped CdM go 3-1 in the tournament.

The Sea Kings began the day with a 39-38 win on games after a 4-4 tie against Brophy College Prep of Phoenix, Ariz. Matt Fisher and Shane Korber closed out the final set with a 6-4 win to seal the team victory.

Menlo High won the tournament title after beating defending champion University, 5-3. Saratoga finished third.

TRACK AND FIELD

Triton Invitational

SAN CLEMENTE — Newport Harbor High junior Allison Krugman, junior Ryan Andrews and senior Melissa Hancock earned first place in their respective events at San Clemente High Saturday.

Krugman won the girls’ pole vault, with an 11-foot clearance, a personal best. Andrews won the boys’ shot put (55 feet, 9 3/4 inches). Hancock finished tied for first in the high jump (5-2) and fourth in the long jump (15-6 1/2 ).

Senior Jake Taylor finished second in the shot put (55-6 1/2 ) and junior Max Van Bergh was fifth in the pole vault (13-6).

LAGUNA BEACH — The Costa Mesa High girls’ team earned third place in the open division with 76 points.

Rachel Daley won the high jump with a personal-best 5 feet, 2 inches.

SOFTBALL

Whittier Tournament

MONTEREY PARK — Newport Harbor High won two games Saturday at East Los Angeles College to advance to semifinals of the tournament Saturday at a site to be determined.

The Sailors handled Alverno, 7-1, in the first game Saturday, then knocked off previously unbeaten South East of South Gate, 3-1.

Junior Alex Bauer threw a complete game against Alverno and also had a two-run double. She did not give up an earned run. In the second game, freshman Hattie Marshall allowed four hits.

Freshman catcher Bella Secaira doubled in two runs in the third that broke a 1-1 tie against South East, which entered 9-0.

Kendall Brennen had a hit and walked twice in the second game for Newport (5-1).
