Tran wins at nationals

Edison High senior Cindy Tran won the 200-yard backstroke March 17 at the National Club Swimming Assn. Junior National championships in Orlando, Fla.

Tran, swimming for West Coast Swimming club, touched in 1 minute 56.16 seconds, 0.36 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. She also had the fastest preliminary time.

She also finished second in the 100 backstroke in 53.59 seconds.

Additionally, the West Coast Swimming’s girls 200 medley relay, featuring Tran, Alli Gillespie (Edison) and Cynthia Fascella (Fountain Valley) finished fourth in 1:43.31.

Tran, bound for UC Berkeley, was a key part of the Edison girls’ team that won the CIF Division I title last spring. She is the defending CIF champion in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
