TOURNEY WITH TWIST

The Mesa Verde-Estancia Tournament isn’t your standard mid-season boys’ golf competition.

There’s sure to be some laughs, yet serious competition, as 18 schools tee off for a shotgun start at noon Monday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

The tournament consists of five-man teams, four players and their coach compete. The coaches can actually coach as the boys play.

They’ll play in a modified stableford system: one point for pars; three points for birdies; five points for eagles; 10 points for double eagles and holes-in-one. There are no negative points for bogeys.

On all par-three holes, the players compete in a closest-to-the-pin contest with winners taking home small prizes.

There will also be a longest drive contest. Trophies will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams.

In addition to Estancia and Newport Harbor, Tesoro, Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei are among the Orange County schools in the tournament.
