COSTA MESA — Left fielder Brandon Young hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to highlight Vanguard University’s 20-7 win in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against Biola Saturday.

The Lions nearly rallied in the seven-inning second game, but lost, 8-6. Vanguard beat the Eagles three out of four games in conference play.

Young went three for three with seven runs batted in and three runs scored in the first game. Catcher Eric Krzysiak went five for six with three RBIs and two runs, while designated hitter Kip Masuda went three for four with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, as part of the Lions’ 21-hit attack.

Center fielder Tyson Leighton and first baseman Jason Dovel led Vanguard (25-6, 16-4 in conference) with two hits each in Game 2. The Lions trailed, 8-1, before their fourth-inning at-bat. They scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Biola dropped to 17-9, 11-8.

BASEBALL

Nevada 6, UC Irvine 4

RENO — The host Wolf Pack claimed their second win in the three-game series Saturday, marking the first time UCI has lost a three-game series since its 2008 Super Regional at LSU.

Senior first baseman Jeff Cusick’s two-run double drew UCI within 6-4 in the fifth inning, but that also finalized the scoring. Cusick has 24 runs batted in this season.

Senior catcher Francis Larson went two for four to pace No. 13-ranked UCI’s eight-hit attack.

UCI senior starter Christian Bergman allowed six runs, all earned, on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings to fall to 2-1 with a 6.35 earned-run average.

Kyle Hooper pitched four shutout innings of relief for UCI (13-8).

Nevada is 12-10.

The series concludes today at noon.

Championships

WESTWOOD — UC Irvine’s Jacob Yowell and Vanessa Houston each qualified for two finals after the preliminaries at UCLA’s Drake Stadium Saturday.

Yowell advanced to today’s finals in the 110-meter high hurdles and 400 hurdles after posting times of 14.89 and 53.66, respectively, in the prelims.

Houston moved on to the finals in the 100 and 200 meters. Her time of 11.92 in the 100 ties her for fifth all-time at UCI with Marieke Veltman. Houston’s 200 time of 24.35 is an improvement on her No. 7 mark in the UCI career record book.

Also advancing on the women’s side are Sakia Sailinuu in the 800 meters (2:15.39) and Kelly Collins in the 400 hurdles (64.27).

Other UCI men advancing to today’s finals are Charles Jock (1:51.90) and Tim Murphy (1:52.09) in the 800 meters. Jock’s time was the second-fastest in Saturday’s prelims.

George Hernandez (49.06) qualified for the final in the 400 meters.

In finals Saturday, Andy Burich placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:32.38), Rex Nelson was eighth in the 5,000 meters (14:56.59) and Justin Carter finished eighth in the long jump (21 feet, 11 1/2 inches).

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

SANTA BARBARA — Erin Kiene led the No. 13-ranked Anteaters with two goals in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational Saturday.

Lauren Davis had seven saves for UCI (8-11).

USCB, ranked No. 12, is 13-8.

MEN’S TENNIS

Cornell 5, UC Irvine 1

BOISE, Idaho — Steven Henderson produced the Anteaters’ lone singles win in the opening round of the Boise State Spring Break Classic on Saturday.

Henderson defeated Mirza Klis, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

UCI is 11-6.

Cornell is 11-4.
