Whittier Tournament

BELLFLOWER — Newport Harbor High defeated Bellflower, 4-3, in eight innings Saturday to claim the championship at Bellflower High.

Hattie Marshall pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts. She allowed just one earned run to get the title-game win and claim Tournament MVP honors.

Kendall Brennan scored the winning run in the eighth for the Sailors (9-1), who had not won a tournament in recent memory. Brennan, the championship game MVP, reached on a single, stole second and third and scored on an overthrow.

Brennan was two for two with two walks and three stolen bases in the final.

Brennan had two runs batted in a 3-1 semifinal win over Hoover of Glendale earlier Saturday.

Alex Bauer allowed two hits and no earned runs against Hoover.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

CORONA DEL MAR — Four players had two goals apiece to lead the host Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League opener Monday.

Madison and Makenzie McHam, as well as Corey Kano and Ally Brahs scored twice for the winners (6-4, 1-0 in league), who received one goal and three assists from Torrey Attyah.

LOS ALAMITOS — Walker Moore had 12 saves for the visiting Lightning in the Sunset League game Monday at Laurel High.

Hayden Furey and Jordan Team also played well for Sage (2-6, 1-1 in league.)

IRVINE — Ryan Mix and Jordan Crone each had four goals and three assists to lead the visiting Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League-opening contest Monday.

Randall Nelson had a goal and three assists, Conner Canale had two goals and one assist, while Blake Burkhart and Daniel Noto had two goals apiece for the winners (6-0, 1-0 in league).
