1 dead, 1 hurt in car crash

A Huntington Beach man was killed in a car crash after speeding and crashing into a tree Saturday evening, officials said.

Sparky D. Wilber, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene on Indianapolis Avenue. His passenger sustained minor injuries.

Wilber was driving a black 2007 Chevrolet Corvette along Indianapolis toward Magnolia Street when he apparently lost control of his vehicle. Fire and police officials arrived at the scene at 8:16 p.m. to find the Corvette with major damage in the middle of the road.

Wilber’s passenger was transported to the UCI Medical Center with minor injuries.

After a preliminary investigation, officials said the driver was speeding when he lost control and crashed into a street light and then a tree. Officials believe alcohol could have been involved, authorities said.

The accident is still under investigation. Police are asking for anyone with information to contact the Huntington Beach Police Department at (714) 536-5666.
