Edison battles Newport today

Just four games in, and the Sunset League baseball race is full of suspense.

Marina High Coach Paul Renfrow might be the least surprised.

“This is my 27th year, and nobody’s ever won the league undefeated,” he said.

The same will be true this year, although Edison (3-1 in league) does have a showdown at Newport Harbor (also 3-1) at 3 p.m. today. The winner will take outright possession of first place in league — but there’s still a long way to go.

Edison 5, Fountain Valley 1: The Chargers rebounded from a loss to Esperanza on Friday, topping their rivals Tuesday at Edison.

Junior lefty Henry Owens improved to 5-0 this year, allowing just one run on three hits. Barons’ senior catcher Eddie Alvarez scored the run with a solo shot in the seventh.

Kyle Jones and A.J. Libuano had solo home runs for Edison (7-4, 3-1).

Fountain Valley dropped to 5-5, 1-3 in league.

Newport Harbor 4, Marina 3: The Vikings have lost three straight league games after falling in the home contest Tuesday.

Marina scored three runs in the bottom of the first but couldn’t score again. Austin Wobrock hit a two-run homer in the sixth for the Sailors to tie the score, and they added another in the seventh.

Robert Chavarria had two doubles for the Vikings.

Woodbridge 4, Huntington Beach 1: The Oilers have also lost three straight league games after dropping the Sea View League contest Tuesday.

Ben Wylly pitched a complete game for Woodbridge.

Huntington was coming off losses to Northwood and El Toro last week, although Oilers junior Kevin Klaess gave up just two runs against El Toro.

“We didn’t play good defense against Northwood and we didn’t get the bat off our shoulder against El Toro,” Coach Benji Medure said. “We didn’t deserve to win either of those games. We need to clean it up quickly or people will be passing us by before we know it.”

Huntington is 5-6, 1-3 in league.

Ocean View 3, Orange 2 (eight innings): The Seahawks edged out the battle for first place in the Golden West League on Tuesday on the road.

Ocean View (6-5, 4-0 in league) used a home run by sophomore catcher Timothy Robinson to tie the score at 2 in the sixth. Kevin Nance then hit an eighth-inning sacrifice fly to give the Seahawks the victory.

Orange is 3-1 in league.

Ocean View also got wins over Segerstrom and Santa Ana last week. In the latter game, the Seahawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead and hung on for a 9-5 victory.

Nick Schulenberg improved to 2-0 in that game and was also two for four with two runs batted in. Aaron Delgado was three for three with a double.
