Spring break surf camp for kids

Laguna Beach Surf School will hold a Spring Break 2010 Surf Camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for kids 7 and older.

Groms will meet at Laguna Surf & Sport, 1088 S. Coast Hwy., and will be taken for instruction between Thalia and Anita streets.

Orientation will be Monday, when instructors go over water safety and ocean awareness. The following days will be divided into a morning and afternoon surf lessons, with a lunch break.

Campers will get one-on-one surf instruction in the water, and will also learn about physical fitness, surfing etiquette, marine biology and how to maximize their fun at the beach.

Cost is $400. Each camper will need a towel, sandals, swimsuit, sunblock and a lunch or lunch money.

Wetsuits are recommended, and surfboards are permitted (soft boards only).

Sponsored by Billabong, each camper will also receive a Billabong backpack loaded with goodies valued at $100, in addition to a Laguna Beach Surf School T-shirt and Laguna Surf & Sport hat.

District offers scholarships

The deadline for graduating high school seniors to submit their applications for South Coast Water District’s college scholarships is April 12.

Since 2002, the district has awarded $500 scholarships each year to college-bound high school seniors who live in the district’s service area, which includes South Laguna.

Applicants must show their involvement in community service, public service, volunteer work and/or environmental activities, and must also submit a 500-word essay about water from topics provided.

Learning Center plans orientation

The Community Learning Center will hold an informational orientation from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. April 14 for all interested and incoming families of the Laguna Beach Unified School District, at the CLC campus at Top of the World Elementary School.

The event will include classroom tours and refreshments.

Established in 1983, CLC is a “school within a school” that, while emphasizing academic skills as defined by California state standards, promotes ideals that includes community service, character development, social awareness with a global perspective, and conflict resolution.

Cracking down on underage drinking

The South Orange County Underage Drinking Task Force and National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will host a training to educate the community on evidence-based strategies to reduce underage drinking from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 at the Aliso Creek Inn and Gold Club.

The workshop will give community members an opportunity to voice their concerns about underage drinking in their community, suggest ideas for preventing young people from using alcohol and develop solutions and strategies to reduce the problem.

Pfendler wins scholarship

Laguna Beach High School alumnus and USC senior Shawn Pfendler was recently selected as the Summerfield Scholarship winner for the National Phi Kappa Psi Foundation in recognition of his college scholarship, leadership, school contributions, his chapter and fraternity.

Pfendler is a dual major who has been named to the Dean’s List at the USC Marshall School of Business, the USC College of Arts and Letters, and the USC School of Policy and Planning.

He is interning in the U.S. Senate and attending George Washington University in Washington, D.C., on an adjunct program with the USC School of Policy and Planning.
