UC Irvine junior Brian Hernandez was named Big West Conference Player of the Week and senior Danny Bibona shared Pitcher of the Week honors in baseball, it was announced Monday.

Hernandez, a third baseman, went eight for 14 with six runs batted in to help the Anteaters sweep Cal State Northridge in a three-game conference-opening series Thursday through Saturday.

He homered, doubled twice and posted a 1.000 slugging percentage against the Matadors.

Bibona, last season’s Big West Pitcher of the Year, struck out 12 in eight innings Friday to earn the victory. He held Northridge hitless through five innings and finished allowing just four hits and walking one.

Bibona is now 4-2 and has 60 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings.

His 290 career strikeouts rank third in UCI annals.

’Eaters’ Chin lauded

UC Irvine senior John chin has been named Big West Conference Golfer of the Month for the second straight time.

Chin won both tournaments in which he competed in March, topping the field at the Barona Classic near San Diego on March 25-26 and also winning the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 8-9 at the San Joaquin Country Club.

Chin’s scoring average of 70.22 puts him at No. 3 in the Golfstat Cup national rankings.
