Barton among strong MLB contingent

Marina High graduate Daric Barton is the starting first baseman for the Oakland Athletics as the Major League Baseball season began this week.

Barton was hitless in five at-bats as the A’s split the first two games of their season-opening series against the Seattle Mariners. However, he had four walks.

Among other locals on opening day rosters, Fountain Valley grad Casey Janssen is a relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays and Edison grad David Huff has been penciled in as the No. 5 starter for the Cleveland Indians.

Fountain Valley alumnus C.J. Wilson is in the rotation for the Texas Rangers and Ocean View grad Alex Burnett is a relief pitcher for the Minnesota Twins.

Burnett pitched for the Seahawks’ 2005 CIF championship team.

Buchoz golf tournament returns

The second annual Natalie Buchoz Golf Tournament is May 10 at David L. Baker Memorial Golf Course, 10410 Edinger Ave., Fountain Valley, and registration is open.

Costs are $100 per individual golfer or $300 per foursome.

The event starts at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start, with a luncheon and prizes to follow at noon. Non-golfers may participate in the luncheon for $25 and children 6 and younger are free.

Buchoz, a senior at Edison High, was left a paraplegic after suffering a spinal cord injury while skiing at Big Bear.

The golf tournament helps with her physical therapy, not covered by the family’s medical insurance.

Huntington Beach Pop Warner holding sign-ups

Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football is holding in-person sign-ups for the 2010 season through mid-July. Fees are $405 for tackle football, $260 for flag and $100 for challenger divisions.

Sign-up dates (all Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) are April 25, May 22, June 19 and July 18. The April 25 date is at Murdy Community Center and the latter three dates are at Edison High. To pre-register online, or for more information, visit www.hbpwf.org.
