CdM’s Ham to Auburn

Corona del Mar High junior Claire Ham, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, has verbally committed to play women’s volleyball at Auburn.

Ham, a three-year varsity player who will be on a full scholarship at Auburn, becomes the fifth generation family member to attend the university. Her father, Charley, is an alumnus and her older brother, Will, is a current freshman.

Ham earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors in the fall, when she led the Sea Kings in blocks (64) and hitting percentage (.557). She also had 228 kills, 41 digs and 33 aces, as she helped CdM (30-7, 10-0 in league) to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA title match for the second straight season. The Sea Kings have also made it to the CIF Southern California Division II regional title match the past two seasons.

Ham also excels in club volleyball with the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club 17-1 team.

In 2008, she was named to the all-tournament team at the Junior Olympics. The LBVC 17-1 team has won the Las Vegas Classic, Junior Olympic Los Angeles Qualifier and the Pacific Northwest Qualifier.

Jones Cup scheduled

Mesa Verde Country Club will attempt to defend its title in the Jones Cup on its golf course in the 11th annual event, scheduled June 29.

The one-day tournament is a competition between four-member teams from Mesa Verde, Big Canyon, Newport Beach and Santa Ana country clubs.

The teams typically consist of the men’s club champ, senior men’s club champ, women’s club champ and club pro.

Last year, Mesa Verde edged defending champion Big Canyon on the last hole by way of a Madelaine Campbell eagle and Tom Sargent birdie. That put Mesa Verde three strokes ahead of Big Canyon, as it went to the 18th hole. Big Canyon lipped out three putts to stay three strokes back.

Prior to Mesa Verde’s 2009 title, Big Canyon had won two straight Jones Cup titles and captured six of the first 10.
