FV Elite takes fourth

The Fountain Valley Elite National Junior Basketball team went to the National All-Star tournament over the weekend and took home a fourth-place finish.

On Saturday, the team won its pool with big wins against St. Joseph’s, Mo. (54-27) and Palo Alto (53-41).

That moved Fountain Valley into the championship semifinals against the eventual winners from La Mirada. After not being able to recover from a terrible first quarter, the kids fought back hard but couldn’t match the speed of the La Mirada team and lost. That moved the Elite into the third-place game against a tough and physical team from Vallejo.

After Fountain Valley held the lead for most of the game, Vallejo fought back, taking the lead at the end of the fourth quarter and never relinquishing it. The Elite lost, 53-47, but still claimed fourth place in the tournament.

The Fountain Valley Elite were led by leading scorer and team MVP Brock Lundquist, and defensively Daniel Rosica led the way.

Westminster Waves 7, Angels 3: FVLL’s Jake Arnold pitched a gem, going five innings and striking out five. But it wasn’t enough to top the undefeated Westminster Little League Waves.

Ben Hill hit a two-run homer and added a single for Fountain Valley. Arnold also had a single.

Angels 4, Yankees 2: This was a pitcher’s dual between Tommy Mendoza of the Angels and Steven Eldridge of the Yankees.

Mendoza went five innings and struck out 12 for the win. Ben Hill got the save.

Hill started the fifth with a ground-role double, and Jake Arnold followed with a single. Gavin Wilson added a single and the Angels ended up with three runs, adding one more in the sixth.

The Yankees’ Eldridge and Tyler Wenkalman each had a double and a single.
