Editor’s note: This is the second in a two-part series on Jamie’s hometown, Bishop.

Hopefully my column on the fish opener last week inspired some of you to visit Bishop this weekend. If you decide to stick around for a week, you can hit up the Taste of the Sierras on April 30 in the Charles Brown Auditorium at the Tri-County Fairgrounds there.

At $20 a pop at the door, you get to try all-you-can eat samples from some of the area’s restaurants, including Whiskey Creek, Simply Delish Catering, Convict Lake Resort, Tu-Ka-Novie, which is part of the Piute Palace Casino, and Eagle’s Landing, which is in June Lake.

“The Taste is looking good because we have more tables this year than we did in total last year,” said Bishop Chamber of Commerce Event Coordinator April Leeson. “And we will probably get more in the next couple of weeks.”

If you aren’t there for the Taste, here are a few more recommendations.

Hit up Pizza Factory at 970 North Main St. Seriously. I have a friend from San Diego who raves about it every time I see him. With pastas, sandwiches and, of course, pizza made in-house, you’ll be sure to find something you like. I suggest starting off with a salad or breadsticks with the ranch dressing and meat sauce. The barbecue chicken sandwich is something I randomly crave in the middle of the night, and I haven’t had one in about a decade.

If you want sushi, Yamatani, 635 North Main St., is your place. If the ono is available, get it. This dish of two pieces of seared and peppered fish on a block of rice is worth the trip, even if it’s just a snack. If you want something romantic and are really hungry, go for the boat. You get sashimi or salmon, three meats (usually pork tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken and grilled beef), rice and miso soup. And don’t forget dessert. Anything you order will be great.

Amigos, 285 North Main St., has some of the best Mexican food in town. My family is rather fond of the marinated chicken platter. I think a few years ago they pulled it off the menu, but they’ll make it if you ask. This dish is just simple marinated chicken grilled with a side of tortillas, rice and beans, and pico de gallo. My dad loves the grilled green onions, too. We usually get a double order of the meat, and it feeds the five of us quite nicely.
