UC Irvine 8, UC Davis 1

DAVIS — Pitcher Danny Bibona struck out nine, walked one and allowed one run and three hits over eight innings in the Big West Conference game Friday.

The All-American senior improved to 7-2. The Anteaters used five runs in the eighth inning to cruise to the series-opening win.

Casey Stevenson went four for five with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Brian Hernandez was three for five with three RBIs and Sean Madigan also went three for five with two RBIs and two runs for UCI (22-13, 6-4 in conference).

UCI’s Jeff Cusick went hitless in five at-bats to end his 25-game hitting streak.

LONG BEACH — Junior Caitlin Haskell scored three goals for the No. 4-seeded Anteaters in the opening round of the Big West Conference Tournament Friday.

Erin Kiene and Kat Plummer scored two goals each, while goalie Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product, had nine saves for UCI (13-14).

UCI will play top-seeded Pacific today at 4 p.m. in the semifinals.

MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast continues to lead the men’s and women’s standings after two days of the three-day meet at Saddleback College.

The OCC women set a meet record by winning the 200-yard medley relay in one minute, 49.63 seconds, while other women’s winners for OCC Friday were Michelle Kirkpatrick (2:14.39 in the 200 individual medley), Natalie Bell (26.76 in the 50 butterfly), Danielle Lavery (1:53.76 in the 200 freestyle) and Jamie Pierce (three-meter diving).

Chris Uncanin (52.28 in the 100 fly), Josh Kloppenburg (58.49 in the 100 breaststroke) and Kerek Pronk (53,18 in the 100 backstroke) won men’s events for OCC.

OCC also won the women’s 800 free relay.

The OCC women lead with 707 points, 231 ahead of Riverside.

The OCC men’s 602 points are 36 more than Riverside.
