Joan D’Angelo, a 30 year

resident of Newport Beach, died

of natural causes in Sunnyvale,

California on February 17,

2010. She was 77 years old.

She was born on April 14, 1932

to Joseph and Mary McCaffrey

of New York, New York. She

married William (Bill) D’Angelo

in 1954 in New York. Shortly

thereafter, the couple moved

to Los Angeles where they lived until 1977, when they

moved, with their children, William and Christine,

to Balboa Island. Joan enjoyed becoming an active

participant in the community. She spent many happy

years as a member of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club,

where she made lifelong friendships and where she

famously created sets for the Club’s annual “Showboat”

production and designed décor for the Commodore’s

Balls and other social events. She also represented

the Club in the Women’s Ocean Racing and Sailing

Association and helped to run the Club’s Junior Summer

Sailing Program. Joan provided tireless support to

various programs at Corona del Mar High School, where

her children attended, culminating in the planning and

execution of the school’s hosting of the Junior Classical

League’s Latin Convention in 1985. Joan opened her

home to everyone with grace, warmth and her signature

smile. She loved her family and friends above all else; all

who loved her will miss her heartily. She was preceded

in death by her husband, Bill, and her sister, Pat; and she

is survived by her brother, John McCaffrey (Doris), her

children, William D’Angelo and Christine de Bretteville

(Jason), and her grandchildren Maddox and Helena de

Bretteville. Funeral services are open to the public and
