TUSTIN — The Corona del Mar High boys’ golf team captured the outright Pacific Coast League title in dramatic fashion, winning by one stroke on a playoff hole against Beckman at Tustin Ranch Golf Club Thursday.

The Sea Kings had all five of their players par the 520-yard, par-five No. 9 hole, while Beckman was one over.

The teams were tied, 199-199, on the par-36 course. The teams’ sixth player also tied.

CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said there were roughly 50 people near the ninth hole and there were loud cheers when the Sea Kings won. Steve Bruno and Brian Mull were in the final group and both parred on the hole. Beckman’s final two players bogeyed.

“It’s beyond crazy,” Starkweather said of the emotional win. “Heck of a way to win a league championship.”

Mike Moorhead had a great day, scoring three-under 33 earning medalist honors. He was five strokes lower then the second lowest score.

John Davenport shot a 40, Josh Starnes and Mull shot a 41 and Bruno carded a 44 for CdM (18-1, 10-0 in league).

The Sea Kings in will compete in the two-day PCL finals starting Monday at the Links at Summerly in Lake Elsinore.

Hillary Bush scored five goals for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League finale Thursday.

Megan Rucker and Gabby Smith scored three goals each for CdM (8-2 in league).

Los Alamitos 15,

Newport Harbor 6

Junior Sierra Michaelsen scored three goals for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Thursday.

Junior Amanda Olevsky scored two goals and junior Taylor Cordeiro added one. Senior goalie Paige More had 15 saves. On defense Junior Laura Cavillo caused two turnovers caused great pressure for Newport Harbor.

Sage Hill 10

NEWPORT BEACH — The Lightning lost in the last minute on Thursday as they dropped their record to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in Sunst League.

Hayden Furey scored six goals as Elena Lewis flipped in two of her own. Daria Gordeva won six groundballs and two draws while scoring one and getting an assist on the day.

Sage Hill will travel to El Dorado on Tuesday for its next match.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 8

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors had two doubles teams sweep in the Sunset League match Thursday.

The No. 2 doubles team of Craig McKennon and Greg Brostek swept, as did the No. 3 doubles team of Clay Friend and Chad Morabito. Newport Harbor dropped to 10-7, 5-4 in league.
