Seniors host one-night exhibit

Graduating Fine Arts seniors at Laguna College of Art & Design will present a one-night-only group exhibition of original artwork from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at [seven degrees], 891 Laguna Canyon Road.

The community is invited to meet the artists and view the array of works in a variety of mediums, many of which will be available for sale.

The annual exhibition is produced by the fine arts graduating seniors under the guidance of faculty member Brad Coleman. The event is the first opportunity for the students to present a body of work that reflects more of their personal vision as an artist, as opposed to work done solely for course curriculum.

It’s the final project for the senior portfolio class, a course designed to help the students begin to make the leap from student work to a level that is closer to that of a professional artist. Many of the students work exclusively for the entire semester to bring this project to fruition.

“This is an opportunity for the students to finish off their time at LCAD on a successful and very positive note,” Coleman said. “They know that this exhibition showcases their work for the art community, and so they always rise to the occasion.

“I’m continually amazed at the level of work that is produced for the show, and the remarkable breakthroughs that the students make in preparing for it. The night is usually charged with energy because they’ve worked so hard as a group to pull it off,” Coleman said.

Parents Club Earth Day events

The Laguna Beach Parents Club celebrated Earth Day with two special events: a craft day and beach cleanup.

The craft day was at Moulton Meadows Park where the children created projects using recycled materials.

They held a play group at Main Beach that centered around cleaning up the beach.

‘Smart’ girls host dinner for parents

First- and second-grade girls of the Boys & Girls Club’s Smart Moves program recently treated their parents to a spring dinner to showcase the etiquette skills and proper table manners they acquired from the program.

The girls helped cook a spaghetti dinner, set the dinner tables properly along with their handmade centerpieces created just for the occasion, and recited menu options before serving their parents.

During dessert, they each introduced themselves, sharing with all 34 guests what they had learned in the program, before serenading guests with a contemporary song and dance.

The program teaches self-confidence, self-worth and understanding of the world in which they live.

The program is offered to all club members free of charge and is adapted for all ages, from first-graders to high school seniors.
