Costa Mesa High junior football standout Andrew Albers earned a spot on the 15th All-Nike Combine Team after a recent performance at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach.

He was one of 25 chosen among just under 1,300 high school football players who took part in the second-largest Nike Combine to date.

Selections were based upon combine performance and projected college recruitability. Athletes must have completed two of the four combine tests to be eligible for selection.

Albers ran the 40-yard dash in 5.45 seconds, he recorded a 4.93 shuttle time, launched the power ball 37 feet and jumped 20.6 inches on his vertical leap. Of the five linemen that made the top 25, he had the fastest 40 and shuttle times

Albers, a 6-foot-7 1/2 , 265-pound left tackle, has gained interest from USC, UCLA and Notre Dame among other NCAA Division I programs.

Last season, Albers did not allow a sack and earned first-team All-Orange Coast League and Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team honors.

Breakers have new home

The Newport Beach Breakers aren’t moving too far to play their home matches this season. They remain on Pacific Coast Highway, playing at The Tennis Club, which is next to the Newport Beach Country Club, where the team played last year.

The Breakers are hoping to provide an intimate setting for their fans at The Tennis Club, 1602 E. Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, as the capacity is 1,800. The site will be home to six of the Breakers’ seven home matches this season.

The Breakers will play host to the Springfield Lasers July 21 at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Long Beach.

Maria Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam Champion, is the Breakers’ marquee player for a sixth season. She will make her lone Breakers’ appearance at The Tennis Club July 20, when the Breakers play against the Kansas City Explorers.

Lindsay Davenport will be at The Tennis Club July 15, playing with the St. Louis Aces. John McEnroe will be at the Breakers’ regular-season home finale July 22, playing with the New York Sportimes.

The UC Irvine men’s golf team is the top seed for the Big West Conference Championship at Mission Viejo Country Club Monday and Tuesday.

Thirty-six holes are scheduled for Monday with the final 18 holes Tuesday.

The first tee times are at 7:30 a.m. each day.

The Anteaters’ lineup is scheduled to be senior John Chin, junior Max Greil, freshman Jerry He, and juniors Bryan Harris and Shaun O’Meara.

Chin has a 69.84 average and nine top-10 finishes this season. He is ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat Cup standings. Chin was selected as Big West Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009, and was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2007.

Greil has a 72.84 average and three top-10 showings. He is averaging 73.38, Harris 74.78 and O’Meara 74.92.

UCI has won five Big West titles since 2001, most recently in 2008. UC Davis was team champion last year.

Anteater head coach Paul Smolinski has been named Big West Coach of the Year on six occasions.

UCI represented on junior national training team

USA Volleyball has announced that UC Irvine redshirt freshman middle blocker Scott Kevorken and the Anteaters’ 2011 recruiting class have qualified for the 2010 men’s junior national training team.

Under current plans, a training camp will be held around July 30-Aug. 14 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, during which the staff will select the 12 of the 19 players for the 2010 U.S. men’s junior national team.

The U.S. men’s junior national team will compete at the NORCECA Junior Continental Championship Aug. 14 through 22 in Quebec, Canada. The top two teams at NORCECA will qualify for the 2011 FIVB Junior World Championship.

Kevorken, who redshirted this year at UC Irvine, is joined by incoming freshmen Jeremy Dejno, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter from New Berlin, Wis., Taylor Averill, a 6-6 outside hitter from San Jose, and Daniel Stork, a 6-3 setter from Topanga.

Dejno played with the 2009 boys’ youth national team, while Kevorken was a member of the 2008 youth national team.
