IRVINE — Senior left-hander Danny Bibona struck out 10 in seven innings to earn the win in the nonconference game Friday at Anteater Ballpark.

Bibona allowed nine hits and one earned run to improve to 8-2 this season and lower his earned-run average to 2.20.

Sophomore Jordan Leyland singled in two runs in the first for the Anteaters (25-14).

Casey Stevenson tripled and scored on a Brian Hernandez groundout for the other UCI run as the ’Eaters managed just five hits.

Stevenson was two for four.

Eric Pettis struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.

The series continues today at 1 p.m.

Cypress 11

COSTA MESA — The host Pirates wrapped up fourth place in the Orange Empire Conference in the regular-season finale Friday.

With the win, OCC awaits word on Southern California Regional pairings to be announced Sunday.

Kevin Cho went three for five, while Matt Glazier, who homered, and Jacob Rogers drove in three runs apiece for the Pirates (19-16, 11-10 in conference).

Mykal Stokes (two runs batted in), Sam Michaels (one RBI) and Scott Stidham each had two hits for OCC, for which Trevor Jensen drove in two.

Ryan Doran pitched the final three innings to get the win and improve to 6-1.

OCC took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but trailed, 7-4, before scoring five in the sixth.

Cypress (22-14, 13-8) tied it in the top of the seventh, and again in the eighth after OCC scored in the home half of the seventh.

OCC scored four in the eighth and held on.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — April Bisharat, Brooke Bartlett and Kirstina Smith all won in singles and doubles to pace the Anteaters in the quarterfinals of the Big West Conference Tournament at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Bisharet won at No. 2 singles and teamed with Bartlett, a winner at No. 4 singles, to post a victory at No. 3 doubles.

Smith won at No. 6 singles and teamed with Courtney Byron to win at No. 2 doubles for UCI (11-10).

UCI, the No. 3 seed, meets No. 2-seeded UC Santa Barbara in a semifinal today at 9 a.m.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

WALNUT — Sophomore Danielle Lavery won the 200-meter freestyle and the 500 free and also contributed to a winning 800 free relay to help Orange Coast College lead after two days of the California Community College Athletic Assn. championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

Lavery finished in 1 minute, 52.65 seconds in the 200 free and went 5:01.30 in the 500 free.

OCC sophomore Michelle Kirkpatrick set a state record in the 100 individual medley. Her time of 57.91 broke a seven-year-old record set by Sherry Tsai (58.29).

Kirkpatrick was also on the 800 free relay and contributed to the winning 200 medley relay (1:47.05) as well. She was fourth in the 200 IM. OCC sophomore Natalie Bell won the 50 butterfly in 26.17 and was on the 200 medley relay.

Freshman Kierstin Colesen was on both winning relays for OCC and was second in the 50 free in 23.98.

Lisa MacManus rounded out the winning 200 medley relay for OCC, while Mary Jane Cooney swam a leg on the winning 800 free relay.

MacManus, Lavery, Allison Grubb and Colesen comprised the 200 free relay team that was second.

MacManus was fourth in the 50 backstroke in 27.70.

MEN’S SWIMMING

State championships

WALNUT — Chris Uncanin, Kevin Donnelly, Daniel Burns and Derek Pronk combined to win the 200-meter freestyle relay to help Orange Coast College to a second-place team standing after two days of the California Community College Athletic Assn. event at Mt. San Antonio College.

Uncanin, Pronk, Donnelly and Josh Kloppenburg teamed to place third in the 400 free relay.

Regionals

NORTHRIDGE — Orange Coast College sophomore Brad Fisher advanced to the round of 16 in singles and doubles before being eliminated Friday at Cal State Northridge.

Fisher won two singles matches in the event that began Thursday, before falling, 6-0, 6-3, to Alex Nichols of San Diego Mesa in the Round of 16 singles draw.

Fisher, an Estancia High product, teamed with Yannick Lapage in doubles, where the Pirates were bested by a duo from Mount San Jacinto, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.

OCC freshman singles player Matt Miller lost in the first round, as did the Pirates’ No. 3 doubles team of Jesse Chen and Tony Wright.

Miller and Kevin Tran, OCC’s No. 2 doubles team, lost in the second round.

Only those who make the quarterfinals advance to the state individual tournament.

OCC was one of eight teams to qualify for the Southern California team playoffs, in which Coach Chris Ketchum’s squad lost in the first round to College of the Desert.
