INDIAN WELLS — The No. 3-seeded Anteaters split six singles matches, but won two of three sets to claim the doubles point and upset the No. 2-seeded Gauchos in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Championships Saturday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith won at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively, then teamed to win at No. 2 doubles for UCI (12-10).

Becka Kwan (No. 5 singles), as well as April Bisharat and Brooke Bartlett (No. 3 doubles) were additional winners for UCI, which meets top-seeded Long Beach State in today’s title match at 9 a.m.

Regionals

LONG BEACH — Orange Coast College doubles partners Anna Walinoicz and Nicole Naughton were defeated, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinals Saturday at Long Beach City College.

The Pirates duo, which upset the top-seeded tandem form Santa Monica in Friday’s quarterfinals, advances to the state championships, Friday and Saturday at The Tennis Club in Newport Beach.

Melissa Boyer, OCC’s No. 1 singles player, also advanced to the state tournament in singles and doubles, the latter with Kim Ho.

Boyer lost in the quarterfinals in singles, as did Boyer and Ho in doubles.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Pacific 1

INDIAN WELLS — The No. 3-seeded Anteaters swept three doubles sets and won three of four singles matches contested to top the No. 2-seeded Tigers in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Championships Saturday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Sam Gould, Steven Henderson and Khunpol Issara won in singles and doubles for UCI (16-9).

UCI meets top-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the final today at 9 a.m.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Vanguard University was swept, 10-2 and 7-5, by visiting Concordia Saturday to finish tied for third in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The Lions (32-16, 22-14 in conference) lost four of their last five, but Point Loma Nazarene lost five straight to end the regular season to join Vanguard in the tie for third, one game behind Fresno Pacific.

Cal Baptist won the conference.

Tyson Leighton went three for seven with four runs batted in for VU.

TRACK AND FIELD

Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE — Katherine Nielsen was second in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 26.89 seconds, to highlight UCI participants Saturday.

Brennen Halliday (fourth in the men’s steeplechase in 9:36.01), Victor Bonilla (fifth in the men’s 5,000 in 15:02.64) and Kristi Fryar (fifth in the women’s pole vault at 11 feet, 9 inches) were additional UCI standouts.

The meet continues today at noon.
