USC 8, UC Irvine 6

IRVINE — The visiting Trojans scored three in the ninth to overcome a 6-5 lead in the nonconference game Tuesday.

UCI senior Christian Bergman was tagged with the loss after giving up a two-run homer to Ricky Oropesa in the ninth.

USC’s Joe De Pinto tied the score, 6-6, with a run-producing single, then scored on Oropesa’s 12th dinger of the season.

Brian Hernandez and Ronnie Shaeffer had two hits and two runs batted in for the Anteaters (27-15), who tied it at five with a run in the fifth and took the lead with one in the eighth while freshman reliever Evan Brock was holding the Trojans (20-24) to one run on one hit over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.

Starter Matt Summers and Nick Hoover combined to allow five runs, four earned, in the first three innings.

Francis Larson and Jeff Cusick each had two hits and one RBI for UCI, which plays at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday at 6 p.m.
