Bryan Petersen, the right fielder during the UC Irvine baseball team’s run to the 2007 College World Series, was called up by the Florida Marlins after the team’s game Thursday.

Petersen, 24, who hit .284 in 67 at-bats with the Marlins during spring training, was hitting .290 with a home run and nine runs batted in with 100 at-bats at Triple-A New Orleans.

Petersen takes the roster spot created when Florida designated Mike Lamb for assignment.

Marlins Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Petersen could play all three outfield positions.

Petersen singled as a pinch-hitter and scored in the eighth inning to give Florida a 3-2 lead in an eventual 4-2 win at Washington.

The left-handed hitting Petersen had four doubles, one triple and two stolen bases at-bats at New Orleans.

In 2009, he hit .297 with seven home runs, 43 RBIs and 13 steals for Double-A Jacksonville of the Southern League.

He was named to the All-Prospect Team in the Arizona Fall League in 2009.

Petersen hit .323 as a junior for UCI in 2007, with 38 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. He drove in the winning run in a victory at Wichita State in the Super Regionals and had the game-winning, walk-off RBI in a 5-4 win over Cal State Fullerton in 13 innings in Omaha. He was named to the CWS All-Tournament team after hitting .533 in four games in Omaha.
