Ellis, Stanford win NCAA title

STANFORD, Calif. — Sophomore Gus Ellis, a Corona del Mar High product, had four kills in eight attempts and was in on two blocks to help Stanford sweep Penn State, 30-25, 30-20, 30-18, in the NCAA men’s volleyball title match Saturday night at Maples Pavilion.

Ellis, a 6-foot-6 middle blocker, had six kills in 10 attempts to go with a match-high eight block assists in the Cardinal’s 30-25, 30-26, 30-17 semifinal trouncing of Ohio State on Thursday.

Ellis did not make a hitting error in two Final Four matches to help Stanford (24-6) claim its first national title since 1997.
