Memorial for Edward Louis Armstrong

Services will be Wednesday for Edward Louis Armstrong, a retired U.S. Navy captain who died Monday at the age of 86. He was a Laguna Beach resident since 1963.

He was twice elected president of the Laguna Beach Taxpayers Assn., and in 2002 he was honored as Patriot of the Year for the Laguna Beach Patriot’s Day Parade.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn; a daughter, Victoria Rice; a son, John, from a previous marriage to Mildred Bailey; and three grandchildren, Shane Rice, Jason and Jennifer Armstrong.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, in the National Submarine Memorial West site, Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach. Master Chief Charlie Grandon will bring an Honor Guard from the Naval Station at Point Loma. Alan Bradfield will deliver the eulogy.

A post-memorial service luncheon will take place at the Navy Golf Course Los Alamitos, 5660 Orangewood Ave., Cypress.

Resident honored for service to children

Laguna Beach resident Fred Port will be honored by Court Appointed Special Advocates for his volunteer service to the organization. Port grew up in Glendale, where he attended Verdugo Woodlands Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Middle and Glendale High schools. Port began volunteering with the advocates group in 1985 and has logged more than 15,000 hours and raised millions of dollars.

The advocates group is a national organization that matches foster care children who have experienced extreme abuse with trained adult volunteers.
