Six file for 14 seats

The five Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley school districts have 14 seats up for grabs come November and so far, there are six candidates in the running.

The Coast Community College, Huntington Beach Union High School, Fountain Valley School, Huntington Beach City School and Ocean View School districts all have seats open on its boards for the Nov. 2 election. Sixteen people have thrown their hats in the ring, but only six have completed their declarations of candidacy.

Coast Community College District Trustee Jim Moreno is running, so far, unchallenged for his Area 1 seat, which includes Seal Beach and Westminster. The district oversees Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa and Coastline Community College, which is based in Fountain Valley.

Tom Dern, a businessman, is running for one of three seats on the Huntington Beach Union High School District. Dern filed his declaration of candidacy Wednesday. The district oversees seven high schools, an adult school and two alternative high schools in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.

Fountain Valley School District’s three candidates have filed their declarations for three open spots. Board President Pro Tem Judith Edwards and Trustee Nicola Weiss and retired educator Sandra Crandall are running. The district oversees eight elementary and four middle schools in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.

Board Trustee George W. Clemens has turned in his papers for one of the three open seats for Ocean View School District. The district makes decisions for two preschools, 11 elementary and four middle schools in Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley.

None of the three incumbents, who filed an intention to run, for Huntington Beach City School District have completed their Declaration of Candidacy.

Ten others have yet to complete their final nomination papers, but have until Aug. 6 to do so.
