Tourney to honor Segerstroms

COSTA MESA — Segerstrom is synonymous with contributions to the arts. But now another cause will be associated with that name: contributions to the city’s youth sports.

This year’s Mesa Verde Golf Classic on Jan. 17 is honoring C.J. Segerstrom & Sons for the family’s contribution to the city’s youth programs, said Katrina Foley, a school board member who serves on the Costa Mesa United board as well.

The Mesa Verde Golf Classic is the annual fundraising event for Costa Mesa United, a nonprofit that provides grants to youth sports organizations, according to its website.

Costa Mesa United is credited for the completion of the Jim Scott Stadium at Estancia High School and the pool at the Costa Mesa High School, among others.

This will be the first time that the Segerstroms will be honored for contributions to youth sports, Foley said.

“We’re honoring Segerstrom & Sons for their generous contributions to youth sports and schools,” she said. “On an annual basis, they give tens of thousands of dollars for community youth sports and educational opportunities for kids.”

C.J. Segerstrom & Sons paid for the plans toward the Jim Scott Stadium and the company is also a title sponsor for the annual Mesa Verde Golf Classic.

The golf classic is scheduled for Jan. 17 at the Costa Mesa Verde Country Club. The dinner and auction where the Segerstroms will be honored is set to take place at the Mesa Verde clubhouse.

“They are a fabulous partner for our local community,” Foley said.
