Married couple captured by pirates
U.S. military officials confirmed that an American married couple, whom media has reported as formerly of Newport Beach, had their yacht hijacked by Somali pirates as they sailed Friday.
Scott and Jean Adam, members of the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, were captured along with a second, unidentified American couple by pirates in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Somalia, the New York Daily News reports.
“We’re aware of the situation and monitoring it,” said Bob Prucha of U.S. Central Command in Florida.
According to the couple’s blog, svquest.com, the pair have been sailing around the world in their 58-foot yacht for years distributing Bibles.
Their capture comes only days after a Somali pirate was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison by a U.S. district judge in New York for hijacking an American cargo ship in 2009, the New York Daily News reported.
