Marine remains in critical condition after Triangle Square fight
A Marine remained in critical condition Monday at Western Medical Center after he and a friend were assaulted in the parking lot of Sutra Lounge in Triangle Square.
Alex Martinez, 21, was struck in the head early Sunday morning by Mark Allen Vasquez, 24, of Pico Rivera, according to Costa Mesa police.
Martinez’s head then hit the floor of the fourth-floor parking structure and he went unconscious. His friend, Victor Zavela, 21, was also hit but did not sustain serious injuries.
Police could not say if the two victims were Orange County residents.
Martinez and Zavela had left Sutra and were waiting for someone to pick them up, according to police. A verbal dispute began with two other men, Vasquez and John Vela, 25, of Whittier.
A couple of witnesses called police about 2 a.m. to report the assault and gave a description of two men and their car. Officers detained the two before they could leave the parking structure and arrested them.
Vasquez is being charged with felony assault and is in custody at the Orange County Jail; bail was set at $25,000.
Vela was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
