Suspect, victims’ names released in hit-and-run

Huntington Beach police have named a suspect arrested after a hit-and-run traffic collision killed one pedestrian and injured another early Friday.

The Police Department has also released the victims’ names.

Laguna Beach police officers arrested Jason Roberts, 32, of San Juan Capistrano on suspicion of felony hit-and-run about 4 a.m. Friday. Roberts was booked at the Huntington Beach City Jail, and a silver Toyota Camry was impounded at the scene, according to Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach police news releases.

About 1:48 a.m., Oriana Millan, 24, of Huntington Beach and Harlan Coffman, 25, of La Mirada were crossing Brookhurst Street at Atlanta Avenue when they were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound, according to the release.

Millan was pronounced dead at the scene, while Coffman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. The vehicle fled southbound on Brookhurst, the release said.

According to Laguna Beach Police Lt. Jason Kravetz, officers received a call at 3:38 a.m. from a man at a local Stop N Go reporting that his car broke down on North Coast Highway in the Emerald Bay area. The man said he hit an animal in Newport Beach and that his car stopped operating, Kravetz said in an email.

When officers arrived at the Stop N Go, it became apparent from the damage to the car that the driver had hit a person, not an animal. Laguna Beach officers detained the suspect and Huntington officers arrested him, Kravetz said.
