Brooks Street to be closed on Halloween

In addition to the city’s annual closing of Oak Street in the 400 and 500 blocks on Halloween, now the city will block off areas of Brooks Street as well as part of a trial program.

Neighborhood residents have asked for the closure to help with the swarm of trick-or-treaters every year.

Girl Scouts host food collection drive

The Girl Scouts of Laguna Beach are collecting food to donate to local food pantries, low-income seniors and families, and other nonprofit organizations, according to a news release.

Drop off food in the collection box at the Girl Scout House, 190 High Drive.

Canned food, boxed food, bags of rice and noodles, and other foods that don’t need to be refrigerated are accepted. The Girl Scouts are asking that people do not submit frozen foods or food in glass containers.

PMMC looking for executive director

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center is seeking a permanent executive director, according to a news release.

Carole Zavala, interim executive director, will lead the search, which is slated to begin in early 2012.

Candidates for the post should be able to lead, oversee construction planned in the next few years, help develop educational and advocacy programs, and implement financial policies, according to the release.

Salary and benefits will be based on experience. Applicants may submit résumés to czavala@pacificmmc.org through Nov. 15.

Realtors group accepting grant applications

The Laguna Board of Realtors and Affiliates Charitable Assistance Fund is accepting written grant applications for donations in 2012.

The group donates proceeds from its sponsored events, like the annual A Taste for Charity and the Pet Parade and Chili Cook-Off.

Priority will be given to smaller groups who serve local needs and don’t have many other sources of funding. Laguna Beach High School students may also qualify for scholarships.

Applications must be submitted by Nov. 14.

‘Come Together’ to help Friendship Shelter

The Friendship Shelter’s “Art of Getting Home” fundraiser is expanding as interest in the event grows.

“The response in the past few years to this event has been overwhelming,” Executive Director Dawn Price said in a statement. “We had outgrown our venue and were turning people away.”

This year’s gala event will be Nov. 4 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. It will feature a Beatles theme, including entertainment from Beatles cover band Paperback Writer.
