Cultural grants on Newport council agenda
The largest award for the annual city public arts grants will go to the Newport Beach Film Festival, if the City Council approves recommended allocations Tuesday.
Each year, the City Arts Commission divides $40,000 for community cultural arts programs. This year it recommends allocating $6,000 to the film festival, half of the budget to its own programs, and the remainder to various local groups.
Arts Commission Chairwoman Robyn Grant said her group tries to determine which projects will have the broadest impact.
“We really look in depth into the amount of people that are going to be served,” she said.
The commission sponsors arts lectures, public art projects and visual art exhibitions in Central Library and at City Hall.
The film festival also received $90,000 of city funds when the council made its special event grants in June. If approved, this latest grant will fund a film industry educational seminar.
Newport Harbor Nautical Museum’s ExplorOcean center would receive $2,000 under the proposal.
