Class of 2012’s Shap Show is Feb. 11

The Class of 2012 at Laguna Beach High School will present the 24th annual Shap Show “No Suits Allowed” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11.

The show will feature LBHS students and staff accompanied by math teacher Gary Shapiro on acoustic guitar.

A pre-show dinner will be at 5 p.m. at Asada, 480 S. Coast Hwy. Proceeds from the dinner and show will go toward this year’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

Regular tickets will go on sale at 4 p.m. the day of the show and cost $10 for students and $15 for adults. There is a four-ticket maximum per person.

Community Campaign raises more than $300K

SchoolPower’s Community Campaign raised almost $360,000 for Laguna Beach schools.

At a recent school board meeting, a check for $125,000 was given as the first installment of SchoolPower’s annual gift to the school district, and an additional $71,100 was given for teacher and program allocations as designated by donors, according to a news release from SchoolPower.

Helping SchoolPower raise these funds were Laguna Beach parents Holly and David Wilson, who donated $25,000 in matching funds. Also, SchoolPower Endowment Board President Gary Jenkins and his wife, Betsy, donated more than $10,250, and Treasurer Laura Tarbox gave $10,000 — both in matching funds.

In total, 558 families contributed to the campaign. SchoolPower will continue to accept donations and is planning one last call night in February to follow up on uncollected pledges.

ESL classes beginning Monday

English as a Second Language classes are being offered starting Monday.

The classes are free and open to all levels.

They will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Classes meet in Room 90, across the street from Laguna Beach High School, 760 Park Ave. (at Manzanita and Park, behind the swimming pool).

Rotary chooses Student of the Month

Laguna Beach High School student Macklin Thornton was honored as the Rotary Club of Laguna Beach’s Student of the Month for January.

Macklin is involved in many activities including marching band, wind ensemble, Model United Nations and National Honors Society.

Outside of school, he works with Caravan, a middle school youth group, and Juntos, a group that works in literacy education, according to a news release from the Rotary Club.

Macklin received a certificate of recognition and will receive a scholarship at the Honors Convocation at the end of the school year.

Coffee Break gets $4,000 foundation grant

Laguna Beach PTA’s Coffee Break received a $4,000 grant from the Laguna Beach Community Foundation.

The money will go to support Coffee Break’s parent education program held at the Aliso Creek Inn.

The monthly forum, held during the school year, provides parents, teachers, school officials and expert guest speakers a chance to talk about issues facing students these days.
